Supporting Neglected & Disadvantaged Children in Romania

blogSince registering Open Hands as an NGO in Romania in August this year, we have been able to expand our Family Support Program. We are now regularly supporting an additional 22 children and their parents, all of whom live in extremely poor homes. This means that Open Hands is currently supporting a total of 49 children.
052We visit these children and their parents most weeks. Living in extreme poverty can be a very lonely and isolating experience which often involves great feelings of shame and helplessness. Our visits are therefore very much appreciated by these families and especially the children are happy to see that we care about them. Many of the children we work with are accustomed to hunger. We help with nutrition by bringing food on our visits as well as monitoring children’s health.
To ensure that poverty circles are broken, we insist that all our children are enrolled in education. When we begin working with new families, it is common that children do not have adequate clothing and therefore can’t attend school during the winter months. In October we were able to supply all the 49 children in our program with winter boots and warm clothing.
