Supporting Neglected & Disadvantaged Children in Romania

blogLast summer we started to work with Ana, a mother of six children, struggling to survive in a deeply hopeless environment.

Ana and her children are among the poorest in their village. They are used to life on the margin of society, experiencing prejudice and rejection from fellow villagers simply because they are extremely poor. Ana needed help because her children lack the most basic necessities, such as food, clothing and a suitable place to live.

When working with families, it is sometimes the case that due to high levels of poverty some children have been placed in state institutions. Ana’s youngest baby daughter was born with a disability. Her name is Andreea. Ana was too poor to provide for Andreea’s complex needs and had to place her in an orphanage.

Andreea has been away from home for one year now. The orphanage is a two hour car journey and Ana does not have the means to pay for the travel costs to see her baby. Since November 2014 Ana has been able to visit her baby only once.

When we learnt that a baby had been separated from its mother due to poverty we were appalled and felt that something needed to be done. So last week we offered to take Ana to visit her baby daughter at the orphanage. The moment Ana arrived outside the orphanage she was overcome with emotions and began to cry. It had been such a long time since she last saw her baby girl.

We stayed with Ana for hours at the orphanage, hours during which Ana held her baby in her arms, caressed and kissed her. We brought some food and nappies for the baby. It was incredible to witness these precious moments. We will now do everything we can to help Ana see her beautiful, little baby girl more often.
