Supporting Neglected & Disadvantaged Children in Romania

istvan10Just over one year ago we started a new project called The Rainbow House. The children who attend The Rainbow House groups come from homes with no running water and had no sense of cleanliness or hygiene. Most of them had never experienced a bath or shower and never had their teeth brushed or their nails cut. At home in the slum they had to scavenge for food and endure high levels of deprivation in a dangerous community. The children did not know what it meant to sit and eat a meal around a table. They were feral children with no structure, who had not learnt how to speak nicely and play safely with others. Seeing these children without the love and care they so desperately need spurred us on to create a safe haven for them.

school 2Over a year ago we started to work with very deprived children from poor and isolated communities. I am pleased to report that these children are making wonderful progress.

Before Open Hands involvement only very few children went to school – some did not have the necessary shoes or clothes. Others did not see any value in education – their parents cannot read or write, neither could their great grandparents. Hence many children and their families were stuck in a circle of generational poverty.

We really believe that we can break the poverty circle by educating children and their parents and by helping them to understand why school is so important. Over the past few months we have had some wonderful achievements:

miklosandlankiSome thousand years ago the old prophet wrote: ‘Love flashes like fire, the brightest kind of flame. Many waters cannot quench love, nor rivers drown it.’ In a world like today where there is war, where children are fearful and hungry, where there is so much hate – love is our most effective tool. I firmly believe that the brightest kind of flame is love – our only hope of healing - because if we love one another we can overcome all the hurt and sadness of this world. Love is the essence of our work in Romania.

curca13Beautiful Romania. I was so glad to be back amongst the rolling hills, the soaring mountains, back in this beautiful country with its clash of cultures, where farmers on a horse and cart gathering in the harvest by hand also chatter on mobile phones.
