Supporting Neglected & Disadvantaged Children in Romania

Over the years we have worked with many children and young adults who never went to school or struggle with school attendance. Without the basic knowledge of reading and writing these children will grow into adults who won’t find employment and face social stigma and exclusion. Many families we work with have been stuck in these poverty circles for generations.

According to UNICEF there are an estimated 300,000-400,000 children of compulsory school age who do not go to school regularly. The EU has estimated that 40% of 15 year olds in Romania are semi-literate.

curca21 2As a team we developed a strategy to break these poverty circles. We believe that early intervention is vital and that nurseries offer a great start to education. We support children both at home and at school. We help children in their home learning and work with parents to become actively involved in their child’s education.

Many families are too poor to send their children to school; we enable them to do so by providing shoes, clothes, bags and learning materials. In schools we support parents during meetings, liaise with professionals and monitor children’s attendance and performance by working with them in classrooms. We also run a well attended After School Program and a Summer School during the long summer break.

As a result we have seen a strong increase in school attendance with all children in our program going to school. To help children integrate and stay in education we run The Rainbow House. You can read more about this project here.
